Periodontal diseases are also called gum diseases.
They range from simple gum inflammation to severe
disease causing massive damage to the soft tissue
and bone supporting the teeth. You may end up
losing the teeth.
Our mouths carry innumerable bacteria, who along
with mucus and other particles; form a sticky,
colorless "plaque" on teeth. Failure
to remove the plaque causes it to harden and turn
into tartar that cannot be removed by brushing.
If this tartar is not removed, it gives rise to
various periodontal diseases. There are two types
of periodontal diseases: gingivitis and peridontists.
Gingivitis is the milder version where the gums
become red, swollen and can bleed while brushing.
This problem can be easily solved by proper brushing,
flossing and getting your teeth cleaned regularly
by the dentist. But if left untreated, this disease
can worsen causing periodontists. Here the gums
and teeth separate from each other. If not treated,
the teeth become loose and fall off due to destruction
of bones, gums and connective tissues.
With periodontal disease treatment Washington
DC, you can treat the diseases very easily.
There are many types of periodontal disease
treatment Washington DC. A suitable type will
be recommended by your dentist depending on your
situation.
Deep Cleaning (Scaling and
Root Planing): This method clears away the plaque
by the process of deep-cleaning known as scaling
and root planing. Scaling removes the tartar
from above and below the gum line. Root planning
removes the rough spots on the tooth root that
harbors germs, thus assisting in eradication
of bacteria responsible for the problem.
Medications: The above method
may also include use of medications to treat
the problem. The most common medications used
are: Prescription antimicrobial mouthrinse,
Antiseptic "chip", Antibiotic gel,
Antibiotic micro-spheres and Enzyme suppressant.
Surgery: Flap Surgery may
be necessary to remove inflammation and deep
pockets that cannot be cleaned by the above
treatments. It consists of raising up the gums
and clearing away the tartar. The gums are then
sewn back in place to allow the tissue to fit
tightly around the tooth. Bone and Tissue Grafts
can also accompany flap surgery to replace or
stimulate new development of bone or gum tissue
damaged by periodontists. A method known as
guided tissue regeneration can be used along
with grafting where a small mesh-like fabric
is placed between the bone and gum tissue. This
prevents the gum tissue from entering the actual
area that belonged to the bone, thus permitting
the bone and connective tissue to regenerate.
As there are many periodontal disease treatments
Washington DC available, only the peridontist
can recommend the right one for you.
