For optimum esthetic and clinical results
in veneer cases, it may be necessary for substantially misaligned
teeth to be straightened with braces before the actual veneers are
inserted. The biting surfaces of each tooth needs to make sound
and stable contact with the opposing teeth and each neighboring
tooth needs to align properly for healthy bone, gums, and teeth.
Without this ideal environment dentitions may deteriorate over time
and evidence will begin to appear frequently in the form of bad
breath, decay, receding and/or inflamed gums and periodontal disease.
This patient received orthodontic treatment to align her bite and
teeth for a uniform emergence profile (the line that is created
at the base of each tooth where it meets the gum and that is revealed
by how it emerges up around the root of the tooth and the base of
the crown). Each tooth has it’s own emergence profile, however:
if it is incorrect and esthetically displeasing Dr. Singer will
repair the profile(s) using parameters that are known by cosmetic
and orthodontic dental clinicians before he actually places any
porcelain restorations. This way, once the restorations are placed
there is a solid foundation of tooth extending from the gum line
correctly and allowing for a flawless bond of any new restorations.
With a proper emergence profile and a nicely prepared foundation
under an all porcelain restoration gingiva can be visibly healthy,
natural and esthetically pleasing to the eye. This level of expertise
and attention to detail is often overlooked or poorly executed in
many cosmetic restoration cases performed elsewhere.
