Certified Pet Therapy

Dogs, cats, fish, birds, and other pets have long been incredible companions for their owners. One of their most outstanding characteristics is the unconditional love they offer to us. For any of you who have ever loved a pet, you know the benefits of having these loyal beings in your life. Studies show that the simple act of stroking a pet, such as a dog or cat, can actually lower heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Even watching fish in an aquarium creates similar effects. It is both soothing and meditative.

Many animal shelters are beginning to bring animals for visits to nursing homes, fostering a healing energy for so many elderly people. Pet therapy definitely has been successful at reducing stress and facilitating social interaction. It also brings the people in the facility together with a common interest. Therapy Dog, Disco, Celebrates 10 Years with DC Smiles

Our pet therapy dog Disco, is more than just a beloved family pet; he has been hard at work 5 days a week for most of his life. Disco, a certified pet therapy dog, adds a unique spin to high-quality patient care at DC Smiles.

Disco provides relaxation for anxious patients. “For people who are nervous coming to the dentist, he takes the edge off, “He's an ice breaker of sorts that makes coming to DC Smiles more enjoyable.”

Disco was certified by Fairfax Pets on Wheels, Inc. in Fairfax, VA. This program also allows him to visit with elderly nursing home residents in the Northern Virginia area.
“Patients ask for Disco by name.  If Disco misses a day of work, our patients check with us to make sure he’s ok, just like they would for any human member of our team.”
