Bone Grafting and Sinus Lifts

Dental implants are an innovative solution to the age-old problem of missing teeth. However, implants have oral health requirements, including adequate bone density, for success. This means that patients missing a tooth for a long period of time, and who experienced jawbone loss as a result, weren’t candidates for this revolutionary procedure. Advancements in the field of dentistry have changed this, and Dr. Singer offers bone grafting, sinus lifts, and an exciting new procedure called BMP, at our Washington, DC, and Alexandria, VA, implant dentistry practices.

Bone Grafting

This procedure uses various bone grafting materials as a supplement to the existing jaw structure. These materials may include donor bone, or bone collected from another part of the patient’s body, such as the chin. As the bone graft heals, the new bone naturally fuses creating a solid foundation. By augmenting a patient’s bone mass, implant placement becomes a viable option.

Sinus Lift

Maxillary sinuses are located just above the upper teeth. If the bone separating the jaw from the sinus is too thin, implant posts can poke through into the sinus cavity. Dr. Singer performs a sinus lift, which entails lifting the membrane and inserting bone into the sinus cavity floor. During the healing process, the newly added bone integrates with the sinus floor allowing enough thickness for the placement of implants.

Bone Morphogenic Protein (BMP-2)

The new BMP procedure is a miracle of modern science and gives Dr. Singer the ability to grow new bone without insavisve harvesting surgery. One of the most recent medical breakthroughs, BMP-2 is an FDA-approved protein with the ability to regenerate bone tissue that helps patients avoid bone loss after tooth removal, as well as re-grow bone for implant placement. Because BMP-2 eliminates the need for grafts of bone tissue harvested from the chin, hip, or jaw, patients experiences less pain, and dramatically sorter healing times. Delivered through a collagen sponge that melts over time, the BMP jumpstarts cell growth naturally producing new bone.

This amazing procedure affords benefits beyond traditional grafting therapies including the growth of the body’s own bone, predictability, and fewer surgeries.
